The Green Run Stallions defeated the Kempsville Chiefs in a Beach and 5A district match up. Green Run’s, Ashley “AJ” James, lead his team with 25 points, 10 rebounds, and 8 assists. The Green Run Stallions improved their record to 15-3. With this loss, the Kempsville Chiefs record disimproved to 9-7.
In the first quarter, the score was a tight score of, Green Run leading Kempsville, 17-15. This first quarter was a tightly even quarter. Green Run’s defense got to work early by causing a Kempsville turnover in their first possession. Jacob Cooper for Green Run made the first points for the Stallions. Kempsville’s Marcus Delbridge answered back with a layup the chiefs. These shots were first of many in this back-to-back quarter. This quarter was also filled with three-point shots from Kempsville’s sophomore Dominic Stanford. This quarter was an even quarter where both teams lead and tied during this quarter.
In the second quarter, Green Run lead Kempsville 42-26. This quarter was a great defensive quarter for the Green Run Stallions. They held Kempsville to 11 points in this quarter. This quarter was the turning point of the game. Green Run’s defense dominated this quarter on both sides of the ball. Green Run’s Jacob Cooper locked down Kempsville’s freshman, Elijah White. Stopping the guard play was a big positive for Green Run’s defense. Ashley “AJ” James ended this half with 13 points and Jacob “Jake” Cooper had seven points also. Kempsville’s sophomore Dominic Stanford lead his team at halftime with ten points. This quarter Green Run broke away from Kempsville and played a strong quarter.
In the third quarter, Green Run continued their great play by leading the Kempsville Chiefs, 60-36. This quarter had some great shooting from Green Run’s Karee Smith and Elijah Kennedy. Green Run only allowed Kempsville to have 10 more points in this quarter. I was very surprised by how good this Green Run team defense played. Green Run continued with there lead while the Kempsville Chiefs continued to struggle against Green Run’s defense.
In the final quarter of this game, the Green Run Stallions defeated the Kempsville Chiefs in a whopping score of 80-43! Green Run continued their lead into the forth quarter. Green Run had a great game from Ashley”AJ” James with 25 points, 10 rebounds, and 8 assists. Also, Green Run players Karee Smith had 11 points, Jacob “Jake” Cooper had 12 points, and Elijah Kennedy had 9 points.
Green Run had a great performance tonight against the Kempsville Chiefs. They showed me that they are still someone to look out for in their conference and division. Kempsville had a great first quarter, but they couldn’t stop and keep up with the Stallions for the next three quarters. This was an exciting game and a great game.
To add, before the game, Ashley “AJ” James was awarded his 1,000 high school career points ball, he surpassed this mark on January 4th. Ashley “AJ” James became only the 4th person in Green Run Basketball history to reach the 1,000 points milestone.
